Faro
Celarain, Celarain Lighthouse, is located at the extreme south end of the island.
Where the south and east coast roads join there is an unpaved (but in
very good condition) road that goes south. Approximately one miles down
the road you arrive at the park's parking area.
The
first place you go is the visitor center. Here you are briefed about
park regulations, transportation and recreation within the park area.
Transportation
is by two story trucks. From the visitor center you are taken to Punta
Celarain where the lighthouse is found. Between the visitor center and
the lighthouse is a very nice beach with restaurant service. Along this
stretch you will find the Caracol Mayan ruin.
At
Punta Celarain if you are in good health and after signing a liability
release, you may climb the 130 steps to the observation deck at the top
of the lighthouse. Needless to say, the view is breathtaking.
You
must also visit the Marine Navigation Museum, small but worth the time
to see. One of its rooms is a resemblance of how the lighthouse keeper
used to lived.
Transportation
departs from the lighthouse to the lagoons and the south beach, one of
Cozumel's best. There is also nice snorkeling here.
Across
the road from the south beach is an observation tower and the boat pier
in the main Colombia Lake. The boat depart from here for the lake tour.
The
main asset of Punta Sur is nature itself. In the area of the park,
hundreds of species have their home. The park is also the winter home of
many migratory birds that have their babies here. Because all the
animals at Punta Sur are wild, the wildlife you see varies.
Cozumel
island is very important for marine turtle reproduction. The park has a
very important role in the protection of the turtles and their
reproduction area.
Killing
turtles, possession of their eggs or meat, sacking their nest,
disturbing them while their are laying their eggs are federal offenses,
severely punished. In the reproduction season beaches surveillance is
conducted by the Mexican Army, the people of Cozumel and many groups who
care about the turtles.
Punta
Sur Park is managed by the Cozumel Parks and Museums foundation. The fee
you pay is used to protect this habitat and to fund the many programs
that the park has in order to better understand the role of the Cozumel
ecosystem.
